A segmented tape shows the instantaneous rate at a glance, and a 20-second average tells you how a thermal is really working rather than what it did half a second ago. A Response setting (Fast / Medium / Slow) sets how much the needle is smoothed, so you can trade a steadier reading against a quicker one. Altitude reads in metres or feet; climb in m/s or knots.
